Johnny
Herbert tests at Mugello, August 1997
Italian Johnny Herbert fan (not all Italians are tifosi!),
Daniele Medici, went to the Sauber test at Mugello this
August. Below are a few of his excellent photos, plus his
enthusiastic report of a great day, first translated into
English, then in the original Italian:
Ciao FRIENDS
 A
thousand thanks to Team Sauber which gave me a great
chance to attend at Mugello test of our BIG (not in
height, of course) Johnny. You can image my emotion to
tell you of that day. A thousand eyes, ears & legs
could not be enough to calm down my curiosity when the
cars were dismantled & reassembled as made of Lego
bricks. Or looking at the monitor without an idea of all
those numbers but the lap time.
The pilots (Gianni was there too) got on & off
their cars or spent long time in their cockpits. Jokes
& laughs (especially at Johnny when he came back to
the box [pits] after he harmlessly went off the track) or
frequent consultations with the technicians. It all
lasted whole day!
But finally I talked few minutes to Johnny as I was so
sure not to disturb anybody. I was so pleased to know
that Johnny still remembered our first meeting at Imola
G.P. It is obvious to say, but Johnny is really a great
guy, all-time smiling and so affable, never playing the
role of superstar. I can say he is great in life as on
track. Thank you for making my visit unforgettable.
Go Johnny Go !!!

Grazie al TS (cui va un grazie infinito) ho avuto la
possibilità di seguire da vicino una giornata di test
del GRANDE! (non certo di statura) J. Capirete
sicuramente che l'emozione di quei momenti non è così
facile da descrivere.
Già quel giorno sarebbero serviti mille occhi, mille
orecchie, mille gambe per dare sfogo alle proprie
curiosità.Vedere da vicino le macchine che venivano
smontate e rimontate in pochi minuti dai meccanici come
fossero un LEGO; spiare i monitor del muretto senza
capire nulla di quello che si vedeva, se non il tempo sul
giro; seguire i movimenti dei piloti (c'era anche GM):
salivano, qualche giro, scendevano, passavano lunghi
minuti seduti in macchina, parlavano con i tecnici,
qualche scherzo, risate (come il ritorno al box di J dopo
un'innocua uscita di pista).
Tutto questo fino a sera quando finalmente, sicuro di
non disturbare nessuno, ho potuto fermarmi qualche minuto
con J. Di cosa abbiamo parlato non lo so! (ho molte
difficoltà con l'inglese) ma, mi ha fatto molto piacere
che J si sia ricordato di quando l'ho incontrato ad
Imola. Non dico certo delle novità, ma J è veramente un
ragazzo eccezionale, sempre il sorriso pronto e con una
disponibilità unica: ho visto, soprattutto, che gli
atteggiamenti da prima donna non sono certamente i suoi.
Questo fa veramente J un grande, anche nella vita.
