Johnny signs as Arrows test and development driver

On 15th February 2001, OrangeArrows announce that Johnny Herbert had joined the team as Development & Test Driver. Commenting on the announcement, OrangeArrows Team Principal, Tom Walkinshaw, said:

"It's great to have Johnny on board. We have good continuity with Jos (Verstappen), fresh talent with Enrique (Bernoldi) and with the experience of Johnny we have a complete driver line-up."

Enrique Bernoldi and Jos Verstappen are big Johnny supporters...

Johnny said he was delighted to be joining the team:

"I see OrangeArrows as a team of people who are very serious about their racing performance but also like to enjoy life and that suits my philosophy down to the ground. This is a new challenge for me, I know I can make a valid contribution and I am very much looking forward to getting down to business."

On joining the team, Johnny said that he intended to enter both the Indy 500 and Le Mans 24-Hour races this year and that his Arrows duties would not interfere with those plans:

"Nothing has changed with my plans to race at Indy and Le Mans. I've got two options to drive in Le Mans and everything with Arrows will work around both projects."

Johnny had his first taste of an Arrows car at Silverstone when he carried out a three day development test, driving both the 2000 car, the A21, and the new car, the A22 (see Matt Fowler's photos). It was a mixed test with Johnny posting the quickest time on the first day but the slowest on days 2 and 3. Johnny was positive:

""It was definitely useful to get out in the A22 and it gives me some food for thought before Barcelona. Generally, I'm happy with the way things have gone and it's good to be in the position where I can go away and think about what we've done and hopefully help the team out for [the next GP in] Malaysia."
