Ben Edwards of Eurosport interviews Johnny at
the Bercy Karting
On 28th November 1998, Ben Edwards interviewed Johnny as part of
Eurosport's coverage of the karting at Bercy:
BE: Johnny, back at Bercy again - how many times have
you been here now?
JH: I've been here too many times, probably - about
five, I think.
BE: You've won it before - what do you think your
chances are this weekend?
JH: Well, the way it went in that session was... er...
quite badly! I'm sort of like a buckaroo! I could probably wear the hat you're wearing,
wave my arm in the air, go 'Yee-ha!' and jump around! It's rather bouncy at the moment!
BE: They stuck a camera on your kart - does that make
any difference?
JH: Well, they took it off again, because when they did
stick it on it was absolutely terrible. So, I thought that was the problem - but they took
it off and... it didn't really help!
BE: Might be the driver then?!
JH: Well... that's possible! It's just that it's
bouncing around and, when you're on a kart, you want it to be as smooth as hell. I'm not
very smooth at the moment, so I've got to take a bit of time to get used to it here again.
BE: You did your charity
karting last weekend - how did that go?
JH: It was very good - I think it was the best one
we've done. There were a lot of people there and it was a very good atmosphere. We had
some little things on the side - some other shows - which was good as well. It raised
about £33,500, which was a damn good thing. It goes to SPARKS: a very good cause.
BE: That's good news. Back to this weekend, let's hope
it says safe - sometimes it gets a bit frantic out there, doesn't it?
JH: Well, it does - but I'm just here to enjoy it. I'm
not here to get involved in a fracas. There are certain places here where you could
probably do yourself a bit of an injury, so I'm not pushing it hard enough, because I know
if I do that, I could do myself some damage. I'm just keeping away from everything and
being as quick as I can in between that. I'm enjoying it, and that's the main thing.
