Sport UK Press Release, 19th August: Johnny Herbert lies
third in the American Le Mans Series after the Briton swept
his Audi to a fine second place in the latest race at Mosport
near Toronto yesterday (SUN).
Herbert
and co-driver Stefan Johansson started third on the 27-car grid
behind the two “factory” Audis of Frank Biela/Emanuele Pirro
and Rinaldo Capello/Tom Kristensen. Having slipped down the
leaderboard after an early pit-stop Herbert, who drove for over
110 of the 165-minute Canadian race, swept back up to third
by mid-distance less than half a minute behind leader Kristensen.
Herbert
lost a lap with an hour to run after collecting a stop-go penalty
for earlier contact with a back-marker but moments later inherited
second place when reigning ALMS champion Pirro crashed out while
chasing Kristensen who ultimately earned Audi its fifth ALMS
victory this season in seven races.
Herbert
remarked: “Second place is a good result and although I’ve
moved up to third in the championship, winning the title has
become more difficult with Tom and Rinaldo winning."
Race
results:
1.
Capello/Kristensen (Infineon Audi R8) 121 laps
2. Herbert/Johansson (Audi R8) - 1 lap
3. Lehto/Angelelli (Cadillac) - 2 laps
4. Magnussen/Brabham (Panoz) - 3 laps
5. Herta/Auberlen (Panoz) - 3 laps
6. Bernard/Collard (Cadillac) - 3 laps
7. Fellows/O´Connell (Chevrolet) - 8 laps
8. Pilgrim/Collins (Chevrolet) - 9 laps
9. Konrad/Borcheller (Saleen) - 11 laps
10. Neuhaus/Field (Lola-Judd) - 13 laps
Friday
practice
Audi
Sport UK Press Release, 17th August: Johnny Herbert's Audi
clocked the fourth fastest time in a rain interrupted two-hour
test session for the latest round of the American Le Mans Series
at Mosport near Toronto yesterday (FRI).
A
thunderstorm ultimately brought practice for tomorrow's (SUN)
165-minute race to a premature halt. Herbert, who will be partnered
by fellow former Grand Prix driver Stefan Johansson, set a fastest
time of 1min 13.487secs around the 2.459-mile track in the slippery
conditions.
"It's
just like racing in England in these conditions so I should
be well up the field although I understand the UK is basking
in a heat wave - just my luck," quipped Herbert.
Friday's
practice times:
1.
JJ Lehto/Max Angelelli, Cadillac Northstar LMP 02 (LMP 900),
1:11.448.
2. Jan Magnussen/David Brabham, Panoz LMP-1 (LMP 900), 1:12.720.
3. Rinaldo Capello/Tom Kristensen, Audi R8 (LMP 900), 1:13.363.
4. Johnny Herbert/Stefan Johansson, Audi R8 (LMP 900), 1:13.487.
5. Bryan Herta/Bill Auberlen, Panoz LMP-1 (LMP 900), 1:13.598.
6. Frank Biela/Emanuele Pirro, Audi R8 (LMP 900), 1:14.364.

Audi
Sport UK Press Release, 9th August: Johnny Herbert and fellow
Audi sportscar drivers are looking forward to the seventh round
of the American Le Mans Series at Mosport on Sunday 18th August.
The 2.459-mile Canadian circuit in Canada is one of the fastest
tracks on the ALMS calendar - in stark contrast to the last two
races in Washington and at Trois-Rivières. Herbert commented:
"I
like Mosport. The Champion Audi was really strong there last
year. We had the chance to win and despite our retirement,
I enjoyed the race tremendously. I hope we can be as fast
and finish this time high in the points. After all, I have
to catch up the other Audi drivers."
